Michigan Reads! One-State, One-Children's Book

Runaway garden coverThe Runaway Garden, by Michigan author Jeffery L. Schatzer, is "A delicious story that's good for you, too!"

It is also the 2010 pick for the statewide Michigan Reads! One State, One Children's Book reading program. The Library of Michigan Foundation, with a sponsorship from Target, encourages you to read this book to children in Michigan during September and October. A poster of the book is available in the Troy Library Youth area for patrons to sign after they have read the book.

Additionally, Keep on Reading stickers and bookmarks for children are available at the Youth area reference desk. Stop by to pick one up!  

Fall Preschool Story Time

 Strega titlePreschool story time at the Troy Public Library, with Erin Marks, will begin September 8 at 7 pm and run until October 13.

We will spend the next six weeks reading fun stories about topics like dogs, fairytales, and Halloween. Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola and The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Mary Finch are two children-favorite fairy/folk tales we will read during week 2.

Compete in the Macy's Spelling Bee

spelling rulesMacy's at the Oakland Mall in Troy will hold its fifth annual Spelling Bee on September 11 from 2 to 4 pm. Children ages 8 to 10 are welcome to compete in the local spelling bee at 500 W. 14 Mile Road. The winner will join winners from around the country for the Spelling Bee final at Macy's Herald Square on September 26 in New York City. Visit Macy's online to find out more.

Nanny McPhee Returns Contest

Nanny McPheeWho's Your Nanny? Nanny McPhee Returns is a hilarious, new movie based on the book by Christianna Brand called The Collected Tales of Nurse Matilda.

To celebrate the movie's release, stop by the Library's Youth area reference desk to pick up an entry form for your chance to win a prize. Just tell us your favorite story set on a farm. Entries will be placed in a drawing for a T-shirt or journal with Nanny McPhee on a motorcycle.

This contest is for readers ages 5 and up. The Contest ends September 10. Prizes will be awarded beginning September 13.
